The US and other countries share a belief in the "normality" of monolingualism, for the nation and for individuals. These beliefs affect not only national political debates, but individual experiences with second-language learning. Nilep discusses how learners may sabotage themselves based on unrecognized ideologies, and how we can help overcome them.
