CU Boulder Libraries has an opening for a Research Assistance Program Manager. This position manages the research assistance program at the CU Boulder Libraries, including the Norlin library research desk, online research assistance platforms, and the research assistance training program. This role ensures that research assistance follows best practices and embraces emerging trends and innovation in research services.

The program manager ensures consistent and excellent service, with an emphasis on strategic planning and coordinating of staffing, scheduling, and training. This role is ideal for someone who excels at organization and planning, enjoys providing reference services, and has the ability to make strategic decisions. In addition, the program manager organizes cross-training and provides logistical support for outreach and community building programs at Norlin library.

What your key responsibilities will be:

Research Assistance Management

  • Develops, guides, and manages research assistance programs to ensure consistent and high quality research assistance in line with professional best practices.

  • Manages the Norlin research desk, coordinating research desk schedules and directing priorities and competencies for research desk services.

  • Manages virtual research support services including managing IM chat reference and maintaining reference email.

  • Develops strategic priorities and identifies improvements for these programs based on user feedback and emerging needs.

  • Develops and updates the research desk sharepoint including the desk schedule, blog, and wiki.

  • Provides high quality research assistance at the desk and online.

Research Assistance Training

  • Organizes and manages research assistance training for staff and faculty across the library.

  • Creates documentation for, and trains, incoming faculty and staff on the research desk.

  • Creates cross-training programs for other service points to ensure consistency of service.

Committee Participation

  • Participates in libraries and campus groups and committees related to position, including but not limited to Recruitment to the Profession, Service Point Working Group and relevant sub-teams such as Norlin Research Desk team and Libinsight team.

  • Liaises with other committees and task forces that involve the research assistance program such as the User Experience Working Group, Building Management, the Outreach Group, and Collections and Access working group.

Outreach and Engagement Support

  • Provides logistical support for outreach and community building activities to increase student engagement with the library and its services.

  • Facilitates promotional materials and content highlighting the library’s research support services.

Statistics

  • Gathers and analyzes statistics from multiple sources. Communicates statistics to relevant stakeholders.

  • Manages research assistance records, including policy and procedure documentation for reference services and statistics collections.

Professional Development

  • Stays current with library research assistance practices and trends; attends workshops, trainings, and continuing education opportunities; develops skills in using indexes, electronic resources, and other discovery tools.

What we can offer:

The minimum starting salary for this position is $50,000.

Qualifications

What we require:

  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • Three years of library or other relevant experience or a Master’s of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree.

What you will need:

  • Knowledge of trends and best practices in providing research assistance in a higher education setting.

  • Knowledge of tools and approaches for conducting in-depth research.

  • Commitment to cultivating an environment of diversity and inclusion.

  • Evidence of a strong service orientation and demonstrated commitment to a user-centered approach to research support services.

  • Ability to identify and solve problems independently and collaboratively.

  • Ability to exercise good judgment consistent with Libraries policies and procedures.

  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

What we’d like you to have:

  • Experience conducting research assistance in an academic research library setting.

  • Experience with scheduling or managing a service point.

  • Experience supporting outreach to a variety of constituencies.

  • Experience leading and conducting internal workshops for employees.

  • Experience analyzing and making decisions based on collected data.

  • History of successful project management.

Preferred qualifications may be used to further reduce the pool of applicants to those who are most highly qualified.
