Colorado by the Numbers: Income

• Bearfacts from the Bureau of Economic Analysis includes per capita personal income and total personal income by county for 1997-1998 and 1988-98 Bearfacts includes a brief discussion of income, percentage growth, state rank, and comparison to state and national measures for the same time period. Consult the BEA Regional Accounts BEARFACTS menu for breakdowns by state or Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA).
• Census 2000 Supplementary Survey provides estimates of demographic, social, economic, and housing characteristics for the United States and the fifty states. The Census recently released data on cities and counties in Colorado with populations of 250,000 or more. These include the cities of Aurora, Colorado Springs, and Denver and Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Denver, El Paso, and Jefferson counties. State-level data is available from the pull-down menu of states. For access to city and county data, choose the link to Census 2000 Supplementary Survey Summary Tables near the bottom of the page. The survey includes:

  • "data on sex, age, race, Hispanic origin, household type, housing occupancy, homeowners, renters, and additional topics." 
  • "information on school enrollment, educational attainment, marital status, disability status, migration, place of birth, language spoken at home, ancestry, and additional topics."
  • "information on labor force status, commuting, occupation, income and benefits, poverty, and additional topics."
  • "units in structure, year structure built, number of rooms, vehicles available, type of heating fuel, occupants per room, value of housing unit, mortgage status, amount of rent paid, and additional topics."

• Census 2000 Summary File 3 (SF 3)---Sample data on disability, employment status, households and familities, income (family and nonfamily, household, and individual), industry, occupation and class of worker, journey to work (commuting), language and ability to speak English, marital status, migration, place of work, poverty status (family, household, and individuals, school enrollment and educational attainment, and veteran status. • Colorado Economic and Demographic Information System (CEDIS) provides menu-based access to state, region, city, and county level data grouped into topics such as population, housing, employment, financial (income and expenditures of cities and counties), income/earnings, tax base/rates, and auxillary data. All data series are not available for all levels of geography. The state and county menus provide per capita income from 1990 to the present, personal income by major source (such as earnings, dividends, interest, transfer payments, wages and salaries, proprietors incomes) and earnings by industry from 1994 to the present, and transfer payments from 1994 to the present. Transfer payments include federal and state government payments to individuals such as Social Security, Medicare, food stamps, and unemployment insurance.
• Environmental Maps (E-Maps) from HUD provides scalable maps on environmental issues (EPA data), population, ethnicity, average income, unemployment and earnings, housing occupancy and density, HUD community development maps, HUD public housing programs, and more general maps on housing programs. Service launched on Sept. 18, 2000. The maps are grouped by theme (for example, ethnicity or income). Variables include: EPA regulated facilities or grants and entitlements; population per square mile; families per square mile; households per square mile; female-headed households; age of population; population by race; percent white, African-American, Asian-American, Native American, or Hispanic; median household income; median family income; unemployment rate; public assistance households; households in poverty; low/moderate income areas; households with no earnings; percent households with no earnings; household income ranges; owner/renter occupied; pre-1940 housing; overcrowded housing; housing units per square mile; median value of owner occupied homes; median gross rent; median contract rent; median rent as a percent of income; vacancy rates; HUD community development maps; public housing units; units as a percentage of all housing; tenants with majority public assistance; race of tenants; developments within Congressional districts; and maps with housing variables from HUD programs. • Income, Personal includes per capita personal income, transfer payments, and dividends, interest and rent, 1969-90. File also includes population figures used to compile the data.

Includes estimates of personal income and per capita personal income by type and earnings by industry, full and part time employees by industry, regional economic profiles, transfer payments by type, and farm income and expenses for 1969-most recent year of data. Data available at a county level.  Use the Oregon State version for onscreen viewing. Use the University of Virginia site for onscreen viewing and ftp (file transfer protocol) of data.
• State and County Income and Poverty Estimates Interactive application provides access to the MOST RECENT state and county level data on :
  • People of all ages in poverty
  • People under age 18 in poverty
  • Related children 5-17 in families in poverty
  • Median household income.

  Select a year (1989 Census, 1989 Model, 1993 Model, 1995 Model, 1996 Model, or 1997 Model), a state, and a data series for county level figures. County level data are not available for the year 1996.
