HIV/STD
surveillance program monitors reported cases of AIDS, HIV, chlamydia,
gonorrhea and syphilis (sexually transmitted diseases). The program provides
current statistics on AIDS and HIV cases by exposure category, by age
at diagnosis, sex and race, and by county. The statistics also include
percentage living broken down by year of diagnosis. The current data is

Assessing the New
Federalism State Database provided by the Urban Institute. "This database
includes information on the fifty states and the District of Columbia in areas
including income security, health, child well-being, demographic, fiscal and
political conditions, and social services." Includes information on immigrants,
educational achievement, utilization of social services, and other topics.
After selecting a broad subject area, the user can select from a list of data
available in that subject area. Many data sets include multiple years of data.
Includes documentation on the sources of the data and a link to download the
data set. Data are also available for onscreen viewing.
Behavioral Risk
Factor Surveillance System includes survey data on lifestyle factors,
such as alcohol consumption, cigarette smoking, overweight, sedentary lifestyle,
and the nonuse of seat belts which may contribute to illness, injury and death.
In addition, comparative data on
the nation and other states are available online from the Centers for
Disease Control (CDC).

Atlas of Cancer Mortality
in the United States, 1950-1994 "maps, text, tables and figures showing
the geographic patterns of cancer death rates* throughout the United States
from 1950 to 1994 for about 40 cancers." The atlas includes a tool to
create custom maps or to download data.
Cancer
Statistics and Reports from the Colorado Department of Public Health
and Environment include reports on cancer incidence and mortality from
1979 to the present. Some include county level data. The site also features
special reports cancer in on individual counties, among men, women, and
in the areas that surround the Rocky Flats facility.
Cancer
in Colorado, 1990-2000: Incidence and Mortality by County provides
county level data on the incidence of cancers of the bladder, breast,
cervix, colon/rectum, lung/bronchus, prostate, and skin (melanoma). County
data is displayed by gender. In addition, the report compares cancer rates
in Colorado to national rates and breaks statewide data down by race and
ethnicity.
Drug Abuse The Substance Abuse and Mental
Health Services Administration provides state-level
trends of drug and alcohol dependence, marijuana use, use of illicit drugs
other than marijuana, use of cigarettes, and binge drinking. Includes maps
and charts which detail estimated use by age groups 12-17, 18-25, and 26 and
older. In addition, the site provides data on substance abuse treatment by
state.
Historical
Tables, 1987-1999 from the Current Population Survey provide state-level
information on health insurance coverage and type of coverage from 1987-1999
for all persons, children under the age of 18 and persons under the age
of 65.
Low Income
Uninsured Children by State includes Number and Percent of Children
under 19 Years of Age, at or below 200 Percent of Poverty, by State: Three-Year
Averages for 1993, 1994, and 1995; 1994, 1995, and 1996; and 1995, 1996,
and 1997.

and Heart Disease: An Atlas of Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Mortality
"includes more than 200 national and state maps of heart disease mortality.

American Hospital Directory provides
name, address, accreditation status, summary financial data, services
offered, and summary data on patient length of stay and costs by category
of service, and summary data on services to ambulatory patients.
Joint Council
on Accredition of Healthcare Organizations Quality Check "offers useful
information about Joint Commission accredited organizations. On a basic
level, you can retrieve details about an organization's accreditation.
For example, you can find out how it rated during its most recent evaluation
or on any follow-up activity. If you want to know more, you can find how
the organization performed in areas such as patient rights, infection
control, and many other areas of interest to you through the organization's
performance report. " Includes hospitals, ambulatory care, behavioral
care, health care networks, home care, laboratories, and long term care
facilities.
Medicare includes publications
and online databases. The Medicare Compare database allows you to compare
features of health care plans. The Nursing Home compare contains information
from the most recent nursing home survey.
Kaiser
Family Foundation's State Health Facts Online provides "contains the latest
state-level data on demographics, health, and health policy, including health
coverage, access, financing, and state legislation."
Injury Mortality Data
from Centers for Disease Control. Select a state and injury type for online
data retrieval 1989-most recent. Data by age and sex. Includes injury
rate and number of injuries caused by homicide, suicide, motor vehicles,
drowning, suffocation, fire, poisoning, falls, firearms and other injuries.
WISQARS - Web-based Injury
Statistics Query and Reporting System provides statistics on injury
mortality from1981-1997 and leading causes of death from 1981-1997. Both
data sets can be limited by date, sex, race and Hispanic origin. You can
query the injury mortality data by selecting from an extensive list of
mechanisms and causes such as adverse effects from medical treatments
or drugs, insect bites, and machinery. In addition, the database enables
you to limit deaths from motor vehicle accidents to pedestrians, vehicle
occupants or bicyclists. The data are available on the state or national
level.
State Health Profiles
2003 The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) provides access to data it
uses to prepare of its print publication series of the same title. The state-level
data (available as Excel spreadsheets) include: leading causes of death and
years of life lost, developmental disabilities, vaccination coverage, infant
mortality; prenatal care, birth rates for teenage girls, motor vehicle-related
deaths, suicides, homicides, air quality standards, asthma, disabilities,
childhood lead poisoning prevention, deaths from occupational lung diseases,
traumatic occupational fatalities, occupational illnesses, AIDS, malaria,
chlamydia and gonorrhea, syphillis, deaths from pneumonia and influenza, lyme
disease, tuberculosis, oral health, prevalence of diagnosed diabetes, prevalence
of physical inactivity and overweight, total cardiovascular disease, breast
cancer and mammography, colorectal cancer and proctoscopy, lung cancer and
current smoking, prevalence of smoking, health care coverage, health promotion
training, and adult vaccination coverage. Also includes background material

Wonder "CDC WONDER provides query access
to about 40 text-based and numeric databases. Numeric databases can provide,
for example, the numbers and rates of sexually transmitted diseases, cancer
cases, or deaths in the United States." Databases include: Injury mortality,
fatal accident reporting system, mortality, natality, AIDS, sexually transmitted
diseases, tuberculosis, and other data. Many data series contain county level
data.
