Timeline of the Evolution of the Music Library with milestones and dates

9/05/17 Update:

We are pleased to announce that the Howard B. Waltz Music Library renovation has been completed! The Music Library opened on August 28, and additional furniture has been arriving all month. Our renovation makes more efficient use of space in staff areas, while creating more group study rooms and update the overall look of the library. Collaborative group study spaces have been the most requested library feature students have identified in our surveys over the last few years. Last spring our new student group study room was a great success, and we’re excited to offer even more study options with this renovation.

We hope you have enjoyed our regular updates during the renovation, and we hope that you will join us in celebrating the re-opening of the Music Library in October!

8/20/17 Update:

Our construction is on schedule to be complete by the first day of class. The renovation as a whole will be complete within the next 4-6 weeks.

We will be paging materials daily 8/21 – 8/25. Select “Request it” in Chinook to pick up these items at the Norlin Circulation Desk. More information on course reserves will be in a separate email later today.

We will be open to the public starting 8/28/17, the first day of class. Patrons will be able to check out books, scores, and reserve materials.

The CD collection will be moved from Norlin to the Music Library in early September. Until then, select “Request it” in Chinook to pick up these items at the Norlin Circulation Desk.

We expect furniture, technology, and remaining fixtures to arrive mid-September. We look forward to celebrating the full re-opening of the Music Library with you then! Thank you for your patience and support during this renovation.

6/27/17 Update:

The Music Library renovation is well underway and on schedule. As we approach the end of June, we'd like to remind you that Thursday, June 29, is the last day to request materials located in the Music Library. We will not be paging items in the Music Library for the month of July. We hope to resume at the beginning of August, and will let you know as soon as we have more details.

We would like to thank our Music Library staff members, Clara Burns and Melanie Cutietta, for braving the construction zone during the hot month of June to retrieve items. Take a peek at their efforts in this Twitter video of retrieving items during renovation.

5/24/17 Update:

The Music Library books and scores will be available by request for the month of June, effective Thursday, June 1. Select "Request it" in Chinook to pick up these items at the Norlin Circulation Desk. Faculty and Staff can also have these items delivered to their Campus Box. Select "My Campus Box" in Chinook.

We're pleased to share three recent photos that show the progress of the renovation project:

We’re looking forward to the addition of three group study rooms at the completion of the renovation process. 4/12/17 Update:

We are pleased to share the renovation floorplan and some renderings from our architect, PEH Architects! Our renovation will build three student study rooms, create a variety of comfortable and functional seating for patrons, as well as maximize and improve spaces for Music Library staff. We will have one dedicated viewing and one dedicated listening station with high quality headphones available for checkout. All three student study rooms will be equipped with large screen LCD monitors that connects to laptops and high quality speakers for ambient listening. Two of the group study rooms will be wired to play LPs, CDs, and DVDs. The doctoral exam stations will remain in their current location.

Please note the colors in these renderings are meant to show features and do not reflect final color decisions.

Here are some important logistics for patrons as we approach renovation:

  • The Music Library hold shelf is no longer available for item pick-up, effective April 15. Items can still be delivered to faculty mailboxes and other library locations.

  • CDs, LPs (records) and VHS tapes can be requested during the renovation. In Chinook, click “REQUEST IT” to place a hold on these items. Unbound periodicals will be unavailable during the renovation.

  • Printers, Scanners and Computers will be leaving the library during the week of May 8. You can send your print jobs to the CAML lab downstairs. Printers are also nearby in the ENVD building next door and across the street at the UMC.

  • All library furniture, including tables and chairs, will leave the library the week of May 8. If you are looking for space nearby, study spaces are available at:

Music Library patrons can continue to check out and return materials until we close for renovation at 5:00 p.m. May 12.

4/4/17 Update:

We received lots of great feedback during our student food event March 22nd! We asked students how the Music Library could make life easier for them and what the ideal study room would look like. Many of their suggestions will be addressed by the Music Library’s renovation, such as sound mitigation in study rooms, comfortable seating, and more variety in study spaces.

More and more students are using our group study room! In the month of March, 93 students used the room, compared to 54 in February. Look for more amenities in our renovated study rooms, including large screen monitors and speakers for listening to recordings.

Effective Saturday, April 15 CU Boulder patrons will be unable to pick up library materials via the hold shelf at the Music Library. This includes all Music Library items, items from other libraries at CU Boulder, and Prospector and Mobius borrowing services. Patrons at CU Boulder can still request library materials for pick-up, but will have to designate a different location than Music for pick-up. If you are faculty or staff, you may still use the “My Campus Box” delivery option. At this time, CU Boulder patrons can also still check out items from the open stacks of the Music Library - it is the paging of these materials to the hold shelf that will temporarily stop effective April 15.

3/22/17 Update:

In order to ensure that all students, faculty and staff have the time they need with Music Library materials this summer, we have expanded the circulation periods for undergraduate students. As of March 16, all Music Library scores and books will have a six-month check out period. This means all CU Boulder users, including undergraduates, graduate students, faculty and staff will be able to borrow these materials for six months. CDs and DVDs will retain their regular loan periods of seven days. If you need an item that is currently checked out, click “REQUEST IT!” in Chinook and you will receive an email when is it ready for pickup.

Faculty study space in Norlin:

If you are a faculty member looking for space to work this summer, faculty study carrels are available. The four study carrels are located on the second floor, southeast side of Norlin, near the Research Desk. They are available via key-card access. To get key-card access, email norcirc@colorado.edu or visit the Norlin Circulation desk with your BuffOne card.

Faculty lockers in Norlin:

Eleven lockers are available to be checked out by semester. These are located near the faculty study carrels. To request a locker, email norcirc@colorado.edu

3/15/17 Update:

  • Both the CD and DVD collections will be housed in Norlin during the renovation. They will be moved back to the Music Library’s closed stacks at the project’s completion.
  • The two College of Music institutional archives held by the Music Library - Concert and Recital recordings and Theses, Dissertations and Project Papers - will be moved off-site and can be paged to the Special Collections and Archives reading room. Email sca@colorado.edu to arrange to view or listen to materials.
  • We will be sharing the floor plan and renderings as soon as they are finalized, which will be the end of March.

Getting resources and materials during the renovation:

  • Prospector & ILL: While the Music Library collection is unavailable during the renovation, students, faculty and staff will still be able to borrow materials from all other University Libraries locations and other libraries and institutions using Prospector and ILL borrowing services. You can learn more about these services here.
  • Online Resources: The Libraries provide several online music resources. For streaming music recordings, Naxos Music Library and Classical Music Library are available. Classical Scores Library provides online access to over 50,000 scores. Access these resources and more via the Music Research guide: http://libguides.colorado.edu/music
  • Campus Box Delivery: CU Boulder Faculty and Staff may choose to have library materials delivered to their campus box. Select ‘My Campus Box’ from pick-up locations.
  • Courses reserves: Course reserves for College of Music classes will be housed at the Norlin Circulation Desk over the summer. If there are materials that you will need to regularly access over the summer, they can be added to reserves as well. Email melanie.cutietta@colorado.edu for more information.

3/8/17 Update:

  • Construction will begin the day after commencement, May 13. Due to the construction, the library will be closed for the summer.

  • CU Boulder students, faculty and staff will be able to request Music Library materials for pick-up at Norlin Library Circulation Desk during the month of June. At this time, it is expected that the collection will be unavailable for July and early August.

  • All course reserve materials for College of Music summer courses will be housed at the Norlin Library Circulation Desk. Please submit your reserves requests to Melanie Cutietta by May 1, 2017.

  • We are currently in the process of moving our rare and archival materials to Special Collections and Archives as we will be losing much of our closed stacks space.

  • The Music Library’s CD collection will be housed in Norlin during the construction and will be paged at the Norlin circulation desk.

We look forward to sharing more information as it becomes available. Please check this post for updates as our renovation project progresses. Questions? Please email mus@colorado.edu
