HeinOnline provides the entry way to a database of over 1,200 law review journals. While William S. Hein & Co., Inc. has been an American legal publisher for over 80 years, HeinOnline began in 2000 with just 25 journals. It has since expanded to its current size, containing more than 600,000 articles from 21,000 volumes of material.
Coverage begins from the first issue of each journal to roughly one year prior to the current year. While the majority of the most recent issues for a particular journal are not available, Hein is heroically working on solving this dilemma by negotiating with the various copyright holders to obtain permission to upload each journal issue as soon as it is published. CU has already given permission for the University of Colorado Law Review to be part of this timely-upload feature.
What Makes HeinOnline Stand Apart?
Ease of Use
HeinOnline features a user friendly interface - a "Quick Link" feature lets the user choose from a drop-down box of every journal in Hein's database and select a volume and page. If you have a specific citation you will be able to locate your article in just a few clicks!
All journal content is in PDF format, so the pages appear just as they do in the printed version of the journal. Additionally, charts, graphs, photographs and similar non-text items are reproduced as they originally appeared in print.
More Than Just Journals
While they are best known for providing access to American legal periodicals, HeinOnline also provides access to the following:
1. Federal Register
2. Statutes at Large - the official source for the laws and resolutions passed by
Congress, browseable by volume, popular name or treaty.
3. U.S. Supreme Court Library
4. Code of Federal Regulations
Award Winning
Loved by librarians and patrons alike, HeinOnline employs cutting edge technology and has reaped the rewards. They were voted "Best Commercial Website" in 2002 by the International Association of Law Libraries, and were also bestowed the "Best New Product Award" in 2001 by the American Association of Law Libraries.
And, they have done all of this while remaining a private company - one not owned by the mega-conglomerates that have dominated the world of legal publishing over the past decades. As a smaller, private company, they can quickly respond to their user’s requests for additional features and product enhancements, and actively seek out feedback on what their customers would like to see in the future. If you have any suggestions, please contact a Reference Librarian and we will pass your comments on to our HeinOnline representative.
