Faculty and Staff Computer Replacement Program

Eligible Faculty and staff members receive a new computer every four years.

The people in the IT Department have worked closely with Peggy Delaney to determine eligibility and schedule of faculty and staff. Please click on the applicable list to see where you stand. If you see a discrepency, please contact Chris Bell (cbell@colorado.edu) or Peggy Delaney (delaney@colorado.edu):

  • NOTE: THESE LISTS ARE BEING UPDATED. Please check back by Monday, May 26.
  • Eligible faculty List
  • Eligible staff List

Faculty computer purchases are subsidized through CU Central ITS, which provides up to $1200 every four years for faculty computer replacement. The Dean has allowed an additional $150 per faculty comptuer to allow us to buy the recommended system for everyone.

Staff computer purchases are funded entirely out of the Law School budget.

We recommend laptops for all faculty so they can easily bring the computer into a classroom. We recommend desktop systems for most staff unless there is a specific reason for a laptop setup.

If you are on the list for this year, your task is to choose your system. We recommend One of the systems described below. If you want that system, just let Chris Bell know (cbell@colorado.edu) and he'll order it for you.

If you are an eligible faculty member and wish to get a different system, please determine the system and identify where funds over $1350 will come from. When you're ready please contact me (cbell@colorado.edu) and we can meet to order the system.

Recommended Laptop System for Faculty:

dell computer
Dell Latitude D630

Included with this system would be a 19" wide screen, external flat panel monitor, keyboard, mouse and docking station.

There are two primary reasons I’m suggesting a laptop setup for faculty with external monitor, keyboard and mouse. Here they are:

Classroom Technology:
The classrooms are designed with the idea that a faculty member will bring a laptop for their presentation.

Ergonomics:
Laptops are built primarily for portability, with ergonomic design a secondary concern.

To make the laptop functional and useful as a primary machine for writing long papers and performing daily research, the system need to have an external monitor, external keyboard, and mouse.

Specific System Setup (see pdf for cost associated with each choice):

Here are the specifications of the proposed system with my comments in parentheses:

Dell Latitude D630 (described by Dell as a Durable, Standardized Notebook and the “Ideal Balance of Technology and Mobility”)

Intel® Dual Core 2.00GHz chip with 800MHz cache

Windows Vista Enterprise operating system

14.1 inch wide-screen built-in monitor

2 Gigabytes of RAM (this is good for Windows Vista)

19” analog widescreen monitor. (This is a good, large monitor.)

120 Gigabyte hard drive (modest size and speed, but should be plenty)

Mouse for use while in the office

Keyboard for use while in the office

Docking Station for use while in the office.

Extra Standard powercord for use while teaching away from your docking station.

CD/DVD reader with CD writing capabilities

No floppy drive

Speakers built in to laptop

6 cell battery (smallest for portability)

3 year limited warranty

No carrying case (you would be responsible to get your own case. If you aren't picky, we can supply you with one as supplies last).

Recommended Desktop System for Staff:

dell computer
Dell Optiplex 755 Minitower

Included with this system is a 19" wide screen flat panel monitor, 2 gigabytes of RAM, monitor, keyboard, and mouse.

Desktop systems are better for most staff than laptops because you get more power and upgrade options with a desktop for the same price as a laptop. If you aren't going to be mobile with your computer, you'll be happier with a desktop system.

Specific System Setup (see pdf for cost associated with each choice):

Here are the specifications of the proposed system with my comments in parentheses:

OptiPlex 755 Energy Smart Minitower (Vista) (described by Dell as "Business Class Leader" and "Business Computing Without Compromise")

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor E4500 (2.2GHz, 2M, 800MHz Cache) (Dual core is important.)

Windows Vista Enterprise operating system

2 Gigabytes of RAM (this is good for Windows Vista)

19 inch UltraSharp™ Widescreen, flat panel monitor with adjustable stand, dual inputes (VGA/DVI). (This is a good, large monitor.)

160 Gigabyte fast SATA hard drive

2-buton optical mouse

Standard Keyboard

CD/DVD reader with CD and DVD writing capabilities

No floppy drive

Speaker bar connected to monitor

3 year limited warranty
