Job Description
The Dean is the chief academic officer of the Law School and is responsible for advancing the school’s vision and mission.  The Dean reports to the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost.  Specific duties include the following:

  • Increase the strength and vitality of the Law School’s educational and scholarly mission by promoting the recruitment and retention of distinguished, creative, and influential faculty, and developing resources to support their teaching, research and writing.
  • Continue the Law School’s historic success in recruiting and supporting highly qualified students and providing them with a superior legal education, including  academic, professional and training programs.
  • Enhance the financial stability and growth of the Law School and continue to develop its economic and other resources.  The Dean must be an energetic and skilled fundraiser, able to work in cooperation with the development staff, and with the administrators and directors of the Law School’s centers and programs.  The Dean is responsible for preparation of an annual budget, for all budgetary decisions pertaining to the Law School, and for developing new external sources of funding.
  • Aggressively pursue diversity in both students and faculty.
  • Represent the Law School in furthering the University’s strategic objectives, including creating collaborative, interdisciplinary opportunities for faculty and students.
  • Represent the Law School to external constituents throughout the state, the country and internationally, including alumni, members of the bench and bar, members of the media and press, elected officials, foundations, boards, and donors.
  • Maintain a strong sense of collegiality and community among the Law School’s faculty, students, alumni, staff, other deans, and University administration.
  • Work collaboratively with the faculty, and with the administrators and directors of the Law School’s centers and programs, to enhance teaching, curriculum, and public interest programs that attract and serve outstanding students.
  • Advance the public service commitment of the Law School in University, state, national, and international communities.

Candidate Qualifications
The successful candidate must hold a juris doctorate degree from an accredited law school and be able to satisfy the requirements for appointment at the rank of full tenured law professor.  The successful candidate will preferably have a minimum of 7 years experience in the teaching or practice of law as well as some experience in faculty administration at a public or private university.
