Private Sector Careers

Lawyers who work in the private sector typically work in law firms, solo practices, or as in-house counsel for private companies. The private sector offers an incredible variety of career options for lawyers.

Counseling

The Colorado Law Career Development Office is dedicated to helping students find opportunities in the private sector. We provide one-on-one counseling for interested students.

Employer Outreach

To maximize opportunities for Colorado Law students and alumni, we meet regularly with law firms of all sizes, in-house legal departments, and professional organizations both in Colorado and across the country.

Private Practice Symposium

The annual Private Practice Symposium is an informational forum that helps current law students and alumni explore the wide variety of practice areas available in the private sector while sharpening their networking skills. Each year, the symposium features more than 40 attorneys representing nearly 30 practice areas.

Other Programs

To highlight career options in the private sector, the office hosts numerous information sessions during the academic year. Recent programs have provided students with information on private sector topics such as:

  • labor and employment
  • real estate
  • intellectual property
  • family law
  • solo and small firm practice
  • preparing to succeed in summer employment

We also host nearly 70 employers each academic year in our fall and spring On-Campus Interview Programs.

Job Search Resources

  • NALP Directory: Useful data for researching participating law firms and other legal organizations including salary information, billable hour requirement, diversity statistics, pro bono policies, and more.
  • Martindale-Hubbell: One of the largest attorney directories in the world. Search firms by location, size, and area of practice. You can also search for corporate legal departments as well as individual attorneys by law school.
  • Findlaw: Search firms based on location, firm size, practice areas, and other criteria. Also contains job postings and a wealth of information to help you manage your legal career.
  • Law.com: Contains job postings and other valuable information to help you keep up with the legal marketplace.
  • Colorado Bar Association: The website for the Colorado and Denver bar associations contains frequently updated job postings.
  • BYU Intercollegiate Job Bank – This job bank contains job postings from law schools around the country. This is a great resource is you are looking for out-of-state jobs. Please e-mail or stop by the Office of Career Development to obtain the username and password to access this site.
  • Google: Once you have identified firms or other organizations that interests you, do a Google search and see what kind of recent press they have received.
  • Association of Corporate Counsel: The Association of Corporate Counsel is a bar association for in-house counsel.
  • Craig’s List and Monster.com: Legal job postings are sometimes available on these familiar web resour
