STANDARDS: Poetry

"Hit," by Emmanuela Copal de León

When we come home --
If we come home tonight,
Dear, let us not talk
About the Revolution
That won't happen soon;
Or -- unpaid bills
Piling up in the corner;
Or -- families,
That reject and disown us;
Or -- friends, arrested, convicted, deported,
And -- are we next?
We are barely making it --
But there are always others,
Who freeze and starve;
We give so much to the Struggle,
But others sacrificed all;
Collapsing, I am always aware
Of those who do more then I ever could.
So, when we return
To the place we can still call home,
Let's hold each other
And talk
About being young and in love.
And I will tell you
That victory will be ours.
