BUFFALO
by Alice Rose Crow

At Fred Meyer, grain-fed buffalo meat is on sale. No tongue tho to tell me what else they would've eaten.

I think of Rick and his work after the Jails and before his face is plastered on ads that mimic
A mind is a terrible thing to waste

Why did you go to college?

Me? To laugh at the business of grain-fed buffalo for sale in urban Alaska to entice them to eat what they once let rot away on slaughter fields.

Buffalo bones fertilize the earth that grows the grain that feeds the buffalo killed and portioned out for sale in a supermarket that doesn't carry moose or caribou or seal or walrus or whale

Yet

What's between now and sale signs for

meadow-fed moose?

tundra-fed caribou?

fresh-caught seal?

rich-in-fat walrus?

farmed whale?
