Course OverviewIssues in health will ideally be team-taught by the members of the high school staff and a variety of expert speakers. A school nurse will, of course, play a central role and as such will revise this syllabus as necessary. At this time the curriculum would seek to address the following areas and concerns:
Unit I. Mental and Emotional Health A. Role, Relationships and Responsibilities 1. Family, Friends, Values B. Self-Destructive Behaviors 1. Causes: Physical, Psychological,
Sociological C. Coping 1. Peer Pressure and Refusal
Skills D. Self-Concept 1. Realistic Self-Appraisal Unit II. Substance Abuse A. Alcohol: Effects, Abuse, Preventions,
Treatment Unit III. Diseases and Disorders A. Cardiovascular Diseases: Causes,
Preventions, Treatment Unit IV. Nutrition Education A. The Four Basic Food Groups
and Six Basic Nutrients Unit V. Lifetime Physical Fitness A. Basic Anatomy and Physiology Unit VI. Safety, First Aid, CPR A. Prevention and Care of Injuries
As per the Comprehensive Health Education Act of 1991, the high school will make the syllabus available to each student and parent to inform them of the scope and sequence of topics to be studied. All curriculum materials are available for inspection upon request of an appointment. |
