MY TURN TO BUY THE ROUND
Carlos Rodriguez

I was seven
when I first saw
my father argue with life--
like it was my uncle,
drunk and pounding
on the kitchen table,
bringing up old shit.

"To hell with you,"
my father would shout
getting up for another beer,
and coming back to the table
with two in his hands.

I'd wake up early
in the morning--
they'd still be up:
their faces red,
crying and hugging.

I told myself
I'd never get that drunk
with life.
