UNCLE WILLIE'S TEETH
William Bray

The first tooth
was pulled from you in
an explosion of love
Yes, he loved the people
in Dios. With god, he is rumored
to have said
Rumored

The second tooth was harder
the roots were tangled and deep
embedded in the land. The second tooth
was harder, it left a bleeding stump

The third tooth belongs to the Civil War
they knocked it out with a repeating rifle
and took what little was left

Your last tooth you pulled from your mouth
and gave to the man who wrote your book
and took your name.
The last tooth you pulled from your mouth
and the pain killed him.
