PORTRAIT OF
A MODERN-DAY SEMINARIAN
Dan Bejesky

He arises to the early morning darkness
sits up, to pay homage to his heart
refers to inspirational words
from the wisdom of the years,
puts on his running clothes
and greets the outside air

Inside, there is a gnawing discomfort
it is a struggle in the cold
but he does it

Returns buoyant and proud

His family: five adults and two kids
in a house built for two cats and a dog

Cooks a simple hot meal
placed in a warm bowl
steam rising from beneath the surface

A hot shower

Adorns the body
with clothes made to fit
made to look good
show him off:

Another in the many attempts
to come out
out of this too-long slumber
out of his resistance to make efforts
to unravel the noise inside
and put it on a plate for others to eat

So he prays-
for what?

Courage, direction, or someone
to take over management of the project

The priest in plaid pants
lays claim to not know very much
reduces himself to pails and mops
refuses to give up personal goals
craves the glue of a friend
sleeps close to her in the middle of the night
hates to see her leave

Desires to follow the little things
that pass between two people:

Drops of fluid that fill up a well
layers of brick that put up a building
honey and peanut butter
between two slices
of bread
