Sports and Adventure

Our reading period is September 1 - February 1.

This fifth issue of divide: creative responses to contemporary social questions, hopes to explore the various roles that adventure and sport play in our culture. Of particular interest are explorations of the unexpected or quieter moments that arise within both great and small adventures.

Adventures, of course, are defined by those who undertake them. In this context, an adventure can be a walk to a coffee shop in the rain, or it could constitute a months-long expedition through Nepal.

We are interested especially in what sports do to draw us to one another, as well as how they help to sustain the self. We are not interested so much in the history of sport as we are in the way that sports can clear the mind and expand the spirit. For this reason, we are particularly interested in work that explores the fine line between the physical and the mental/spiritual, and we hope to publish work that reflects a wide range of what might be considered sport: from mountaineering to cycling to birding.
