This Issue
In this issue, CYE publishes the six winning papers in the 2003 Graduate Student Paper Award for Excellence in Research competition. They represent the best qualities of research that advances knowledge about the significance of the environment to children and youth.
Requirements for submission to the competition stipulated that papers be original and examine some aspect of the relationships between children, youth and their environments. The papers we received covered a broad range of topics and used different approaches, including empirical research, theoretical and historical investigations, critical literature reviews, design analyses, post-occupancy evaluations, policy studies, and program assessments.
A distinguished panel of leading environment and behavior researchers, consisting of Anastasia Loukaitou-Sideris, Mark Blades, Arza Churchman, and Gary W. Evans, reviewed 28 submissions that reported on original and stimulating research from eight countries. We are grateful to these reviewers for giving freely of their time, providing thoughtful recommendations and offering constructive comments to the authors. Their generosity and professionalism are inspiring models of collegiality. Kudos also to Darcy Varney, Assistant Editor of the journal, who made our lives ever so much easier by flawlessly organizing files, coordinating responses, and conducting correspondence.
All finalists in the competition received comments and suggestions from reviewers. We selected the top six papers for publication, contingent on revisions recommended by the reviewers. We congratulate the winners, and we thank all those who submitted papers for sharing their work with us. CYE seeks to provide a forum where young researchers can learn from more senior colleagues in the field. Judging from the responses we received, the competition served a useful function in this regard.
New Developments
The articles in this issue are available in PDF format, in response to a request made at the Children, Youth and Environments Network meeting at the Environmental Design Research Association conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in June. By providing articles in both HTML and PDF format, we hope to make viewing and printing articles easier for readers. During the past year, we have learned a great deal about online publishing. We have introduced several changes and will continue to be receptive to suggestions for further improvement. Please use the comment form on the homepage to send us feedback.
Readers can now find CYE articles through several online databases. The journal is abstracted and indexed in Sociological Abstracts, Community Services Abstracts, Sage Urban Studies Abstracts, Sage Family Studies Abstracts, Journal of Planning Literature, and the Directory of Open Access Journals. As part of the new format, articles now have running heads and pagination, making inclusion in additional databases feasible.
Please, note that the journal now has a new domain name and update your bookmark: http://www.colorado.edu/journals/cye/. This new web address is still hosted by the University of Colorado but provides greater back-up reliability and stability of service.
Since CYE first went online in May, 2003, the site has recorded more than 45,000 unique visits from readers in 98 countries. Responses have been enthusiastic, reflecting excitement about our interdisciplinary approach and our commitment to increasing dialogue between researchers and practitioners around the globe. The journal appears to address a need by providing an outlet for peer-reviewed research as well as reports from people working in the field, supporting the sharing of knowledge and exchange of experience across disciplinary and national boundaries.
Looking Ahead
We are developing a program of thematic foci that will consist of papers on particular topics. The next issue, Volume 14, number 2, will feature papers on various aspects of child-friendly cities. Volume 15, number 1, will give special attention to children’s environmental health, and Volume 15, number 2, will appear as a joint issue with Revista Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales, Niñez y Juventud, dedicated to aspects of children and local governance. Authors interested in submitting a paper on any of these topics can contact us for more information at cye@colorado.edu. We also welcome proposals for themes for future issues and inquiries about the possibility of guest editing.
Enjoy the current issue, and let us know how CYE can better serve your needs for information and interaction.
