The School of Journalism and Mass Communication processes applications for fall enrollment only. We do not process applications for spring or summer enrollment.

Master’s Options
Newsgathering: Offers print and broadcast specialization and is suited to students entering the master’s program with limited professional experience in journalism. Head: Professor and Associate Dean Robert Trager, 303-492-0502, trager@colorado.edu.

Mass Communication Research: Designed for students who seek to pursue media studies or enhance an undergraduate or professional background. The research master's is especially recommended for students interested in eventually earning a PhD degree. Head: Professor and Associate Dean Robert Trager, 303-492-0502, trager@colorado.edu.

Graduate Certificate in Environment, Policy and Society:  The program is available to Newsgathering and Research master's students. It offers the opportunity to earn a master's degree with an emphasis in environmental journalism. The course work for the certificate takes about two years to complete. Doctoral
The PhD in communication offered by the School of Journalism and Mass Communication is dedicated to interdisciplinary inquiry into the social, political, economic and cultural dimensions of media, nationally and internationally, historically and in contemporary societies. Financial Support
Master’s
A few graduate assistantships are available. Applicants who wish to be considered should submit a resume and letter that includes detailed professional or academic qualifications by Feb. 1 as part of their application material. Applicants are chosen based on experience and the specific skills needed for available assistantships each semester.

PhD
Admitted PhD students are awarded graduate assistantships, including a tuition waiver and stipend.
