Urban legends are stories that are popularly accepted historically,
appear mysteriously, and spread throughout society in a variety
of forms. They often contain elements of humor or horror and aren't
necessarily true, although they may contain elements of truth. The
Urban Legends Archives were started in 1991 and are categorized
into subject headings ranging from animals to death, food to movies
and politics to songs. Each heading is further subdivided into a
list of various urban legends from around the world. Urbanlegends.com
provides a link to the alt.folklore.urban (AFU) database
where the latest news on currently circulating folklore can be found.
Visitors can join the AFU newsgroup, devoted to confirming and debunking
all kinds of old wives tales, ghost stories and tidbits of trivia.

The Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the
Paranormal (CSICOP) began in 1976 and is a non-profit scientific
and educational organization that encourages the critical investigation
of paranormal claims. CSICOP is comprised of a network of people
including scientists, academics and science writers, who objectively
examine claims of the paranormal and disseminate factual information
about results to the public. Visitors can talk with other skeptics
in the chat rooms and join the mailing list, which provides information
regarding upcoming events and conferences. Read through past archives;
subscribe to the CSICOP official journal, the Skeptical Inquirer;
and become a CSICOP Associate. The Skeptseum, a place where visitors
can view images of artifacts associated with paranormal and supernatural
beliefs from around the world, can be accessed and keyword searches

This scholarly site provides a detailed index of Victorian websites
on the Internet with over 300 links currently listed. There are
also links to scholar's homepages, all of whom are associated with
major universities or institutions. Other index lists include British
and Irish authors, English Literature, a Dickens page, and 19th
century authors. Mitsuharu Matsuoka, an Associate Professor in the
Language and Culture program at the Nagoya University in Nagoya,
Japan, maintains this site.

Literary Gothic is the Web's premier guide to all things concerned
with literary Gothicism, which includes ghost lore, Gothic fiction,
novels and supernaturalism literature. The site is maintained by
Jack Voller, an Associate Professor of English at Southern Illinois
University, and provides book reviews, essays and description overviews
of the site's extensive collection of Gothic literature. The primary
intention of the site is to help make resources for the study of
Gothic literature readily available. There are links to online discussion
groups and forums where people can ask questions and share their
passion for Gothic literature. Discussion groups address topics
ranging from horror literature to vampires. An area of the site
is dedicated to helping people start work researching Goth topics.
A general resource section, bibliography list and an alphabetical
e-text library, containing Gothic materials, are all available.

available to locate recent news reports regarding a particular subject

Gaslight, an Internet discussion list was started in July 1993 by
Mt. Royal College in Calgary, Canada. The purpose of the site is
to provide and review a weekly story written between 1800-1919 from
the annals of mystery, adventure and "The Weird." The
discussion group reviews the story individually then comes together
to talk about it through an online forum. Visitors to the site can
access a list of current readings and review discussion digests
from 1999-2000. The site also provides a recommended list of source
links and a keyword search can be performed within the gaslight
