phone Personal web page:
Scholar-in-Residence Jim Sheeler joined the faculty in 2008 to explore the elements of storytelling. He won the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for “Final Salute,” a story published in the Rocky Mountain News that chronicled the sacrifices of military families as seen through the eyes of a casualty notification officer. He expanded the story into a book, “Final Salute” (Penquin, 2008). He previously authored the book “Obit” (Pruett, 2007) based on his narrative obituaries of everyday people. He has also contributed to “Best Newspaper Writing 2006-2007” (CQ Press, 2007), and “Life on the Death Beat,” (Marion Press, 2005). He took his first newspaper job at the Daily Camera in Boulder in 1991, and later helped start the Boulder Planet community weekly in 1996 (when the paper folded in 1999, he wrote its obituary). Sheeler has won numerous national writing awards and has served as a featured guest speaker for military and journalism organizations. He has a BA in journalism from Colorado State University and an MA in journalism from the University of Colorado. He taught as an adjunct professor at CU in 2007. Sheeler lives with his wife and son in Boulder.
