Associate Professor Len Ackland, co-director of the Center for Environmental Journalism, joined the faculty in 1991 and became founding director of the CEJ the following year. In 2008 he was awarded a Guggenheim FellowshipHe is author of Making a Real Killing: Rocky Flats and the Nuclear West  (U. of New Mexico Press, paperback edition 2002). Before coming to CU he was editor of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists and previously worked as a reporter at newspapers including the Chicago Tribune and Des Moines Register. He received a George Polk award for reporting on local issues in 1978 and under his leadership the Bulletin won the National Magazine Award in 1987 for a special issue on the Chernobyl nuclear accident.  Ackland began his journalism career as a free-lance journalist in Vietnam in 1968 after graduating from CU as a history major. He has a master's degree in international relations from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.
