The Progressive Era: 1890-1920

Who were the Progressive Reformers?

Two models of families in which young people lived:
1. family economy

2. Sheltered childhood

What social and cultural changes helped along the agendas of reformers?
1. rising incomes

2. declining birth rates

3. growing awareness of needs of young people

4. increasing demand for education

5. urbanization and manufacturing

BUT… increased autonomy among middle class young people.

How were middle class young people enjoying more autonomy?
