Grading

Your course grade will be based upon the following:

Exams:
Midterm 20
Final 20
Assignments:
#1: 10
#2: 10
#3: 10
#4 (Book/music review): 10
Class participation: 20

There are two exams (a mid-semester and final), three short papers, and an additional short paper that will be either a book or music review. Exams will be in essay form, and you will be given a study guide in advance of the exams. You will be asked to draw upon readings, lectures, and recitation activities for your exams and papers, and all exams and papers are to be written individually. You will find guidelines for the assignments, including specific suggestions for studying and writing for this class, under assignments. Check the class discussions for other helps on assignments.

Attendance and participation in the recitation and lecture sessions is worth 20% of the course grade. In order to earn a passing participation grade (15%), you must attend class regularly, be prepared and attentive, have something relevant to ask or tell in both lecture and recitation sessions as well as in one-on-one conversations with your TA and Dr. Clark, and be courteous toward your classmates and your teachers. To earn the full 20 participation points, you will need to go above and beyond the minimal requirements listed here. If you are concentrating not just on the points but on actually learning something in this class, this will not be a problem; it may even be fun.

Written assignments must be typed and double-spaced and turned in to your TA at the beginning of recitation on the dates listed below. In order to receive full credit for the assignment, you must participate in the class discussion about the assignment on that day.

Both exams must be taken on the dates listed below. No early exams will be given. Make-up exams will be given in cases of serious medical problems that are verified by a physician or health service provider. Students with special needs (physical, learning) will be gladly accommodated. P lease talk to us early in the semester to make arrangements.

Grades are final. Assignments and exams are graded on the basis of performance, not effort. Effort will be recognized in your participation grade for the course. The only circumstances under which Dr. Clark or your TA would change a grade include: (a) if one of us has made an error, or (b) if one of us has failed to hold you to the same standard as everyone else. In the event that you feel that your classmate(s) received an undeserved grade, you should make your case in writing to Dr. Clark within two weeks of receiving your grade (delivered to Dr. Clark's mailbox; email attachments will not be accepted). Incompletes are not given in this course. If you are having difficulty keeping up with the assignments, meeting deadlines, etc., please make an appointment to see your TA or Dr. Clark as soon as a problem arises.

Dr. Clark and your TAs do not give out grades over email or the telephone. Midterm, final exams, and final grades will be posted according to social security number at Armory 102B as soon as they are available. Word of their availability will be published here.
