Bylines Briefly
John PepperdineDid you know that more than 50 SJMC students started classes this fall with the help of scholarships made possible by donations from alumni and friends of the School? Donations in all amounts--some $25 to $50--allowed the School to award more than $100,000 in scholarships for the first time ever. You can help support deserving and talented students by giving to the School. You can also help all students by upgrading computers, bringing in speakers or just keeping the lights on! If you'd like to give directly to the School, give securely online through the CU Foundation. Of course, you're welcome to contact me directly at john.pepperdine@cufund.org.

Senior Director of Development
Students at the DNCScott Franz and Anne Hathaway at the DNC.
They "twittered" and met celebrities, assisted big names in national news, landed exclusives, chauffered politicians, worked for non-profits and marched in protest. SJMC students had a front row seat as interns and volunteers at the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver this August.

Junior news-editorial major Scott Franz (pictured above with actress Anne Hathaway) was one of several students who met Hollywood stars at the convention. "We put in 14 hour days, usually getting back to Boulder at 3-4 a.m. after stopping by the Rockbar on Colfax to see celebrities and debrief," he said. Other students like senior Ashleigh Oldland (pictured below on the right) and alumna Tracee Herbaugh ('04) enjoyed meeting media greats like CBS's Bob Schieffer.

Tracee Herbaugh, center, and Ashleigh Oldland with CBS's Bob SchiefferFor many students, this was the first time they'd had a chance to be involved in a major news event. Senior broadcast major Kasia Broussalian said her time photographing the convention for the Rocky Mountain News was a "fantastic experience with the hustle and bustle and photographers around every corner."

After recovering from lack of sleep and celebrity fever, the students who attended the DNC said that it was a highly rewarding experience. Based on comments to Internship Director Alan Kirkpatrick, most students who attended the convention would agree with junior advertising major Lauren Kashuk when she said, "It was an amazing week and I feel so privileged to have been able to be a part of it."

Graduate Students
Seth Masia, Erin Bodine and Laurie Van Horn. The School welcomed 38 new master's students (12 research and 26 Newsgathering) and six new doctoral students this fall. That makes a total of 80 master's students and 25 doctoral students who are studying at the SJMC this fall.

During orientation, the new master's students learned about career possibilities from Seth Masia (MA'07), managing editor of Solar Today magazine, Erin Bodine (MA'06), senior account executive at Development Counsellors International, and Laurie Van Horn (MA'97), communications director for the YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park (pictured above).

Undergraduates
The Radio 1190 booth at the Info Fair.Undergraduates were welcomed to the J-School at an information fair the first week of classes. The enthusiastic students signed up to participate in the CU Independent, Radio 1190, the Journalism Board and several other student organizations.

The Next Generation
Working with undergraduate students of this generation is proving to be both challenging and rewarding. Gigi Carroll, a researcher who studies the attitudes and values of the Millennial Generation, recently described members of this generation as having more choices and the ability to get what they want more immediately than any other generation in modern history. This is the most protected (by parents), the most confident and the most "empowered" generation--but also the most altruistic and tolerant.

This is not only a "Me" generation but also a "We" generation, putting social relationships at a premium. A recent survey reported that three-fourths of this generation said they expect to start their own business upon graduation from college rather than seek jobs in large corporations, according to Carroll. And many said they intend to work in a job for no longer than three years before moving on, perhaps to the next in a series of "careers."
