Greetings!
We're off to a splendid start with  this new newsletter, and thanks to all of you who replied with virtual applause. Just for the record, a month ago we sent this to 3,879 alums and friends of the School, and only eight opted to "unsubscribe." I'll take that ratio any day. Thanks also to those who sent in their personal news or ideas on formatting or content. Keep hitting those Reply buttons! See you in a month.

Jad Davenport Wins Explorers' Award
 Freelance photographer and writer Jad Davenport (MA '98) never expected to win a Lowell Thomas Award. He didn't even know he was in the running.
"The
Lowell Thomas was a great surprise," Davenport said. "I got this e-mail
from the UK out of the blue (thought it was spam and almost deleted
it). Turns out ISLANDS magazine submitted a story I wrote and
photographed about South Georgia Island in the Antarctic called
'Ultimate Icebreaker.'"
Davenport's article received a silver
award in the environmental tourism category of the Society of American Travel Writers' Journalism Competition. This year SATW received 1,490
entries in 27 categories, a record high for the competition.
His article about the rebound of an island near Antarctica that once
served as a sort of seal and whale slaughterhouse received high praise
from judges, who called it "an entertaining and inspiring read about
resurrection."
"It truly was one of my favorite stories to write and photograph," he
said. "I thought, 'Wow! Here's a place that turned the tables on
mankind.'"
This is the first award Davenport has won and it's helped him land a
few new assignments, including work with Sunset magazine. Although he
loves international assignments, Davenport is happy to stick closer to
home with his wife and 1-year-old daughter. |
Call for Nominations for New Distinguished Alumni Award
Help us honor one fabulous SJMC alum by submitting your nominations for the new Distinguished Alumni Award. This annual award will recognize alumni for extraordinary achievement (especially in the communication professions) or for ongoing support for the School, or for both.
Send your nominations to Bylines@Colorado.edu before Jan. 15 with "Distinguished Alumni" in the subject line, and tell us in 2-3 sentences why you think your nominee deserves this recognition. The award is funded by Doug and Mary Ann Looney (pictured above). Doug is a 1963 graduate of the School. The recipient will be honored at the spring commencement ceremony.

Campus Media Updates
NewsTeam on the Air
Boulder's only television newscast, NewsTeam Boulder has been offering packages to the Online Student Television Network, a Web-based service that pays the School $200 for every package it accepts for its daily program. Thus far NewsTeam has sold six packages, over the last sixweeks.
Radio 1190 Raises $50,000
The student-run radio station, Radio 1190, met its goal of "5,000" watts during a fall campaign, which encouraged listeners to "buy" a watt at $10 apiece (6 watts gets you a t-shirt). Interested in helping out? Call 303-735-ROCK.
Campus Press Scoops Again
They did it again! Those tireless reporters at Campus Press broke the story of a diesel fuel spill that flowed into Boulder Creek at 5 p.m. Nov. 14. A few weeks earlier they were first to report about the early morning Gold Run fire, posting the news at 4 a.m., Oct. 26. CBS in Denver later called and asked permission to use the photos.

Patti Dennis, Vice President/News Director at Denver's Channel 9, and Jeff Steinhour, Managing Partner and Director of Content Management at Crispin Porter + Bogusky, joined the SJMC Advisory Board.
Ad Students Shine at the Dairy Show
Senior advertising students show off their creative work from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 11, at the Dairy Center for the Arts, 2590 Walnut St., Boulder. Last spring, CU advertising students took home more honors than competitors from any other university at the NewYork One Club's annual One Show student competition.
Donning the Mortar Board
Patti Dennis, Vice President/News Director at Denver's Channel 9, will deliver the graduation speech at the
2 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 20 in Macky Auditorium, when 81 undergraduates, six master's students and three PhD students become newly minted journalism graduates.
