School wins Boulder campus
Diversity Service Award
The Chancellor’s Advisory Committee for Minority Affairs honored the School as the 2004 recipient of the Boulder campus Diversity Service Award for “continuing efforts to create a diverse, supportive, learning, working and living environment and a commitment to promoting an appreciation and understanding of issues related to people of color and the multicultural world in which we live.”
“The award is an honor for the School and is a tribute to the unflagging efforts of Dave Martinez, Steve Jones and the faculty and staff who make diversity a priority, both in the School and in our work across the campus,” Dean Paul Voakes said.
Martinez accepted the award on the School’s behalf at the ninth annual Campus Diversity Summit on Feb. 27.
In addition, Martinez received the campus’s Equity and Excellence Award for a staff member, and Associate Professor Polly McLean received the same award for a faculty member.
SPJ honors the late Sue O’Brien
Sue O’Brien, former associate dean of the school and editor of the editorial page at The Denver Post was posthumously presented the Keeper of the Flame Award at the Society of Professional Journalists’ 25th annual Colorado competition in May. The award honors extraordinary dedication to ethical, responsible journalism and professional integrity. O’Brien died in August 2003 from cancer. She was 64.
New policy: Factual error = F
In January, the School implemented a policy of giving students an automatic “F” for any assignment turned in to a professor containing a single factual error.
The policy is intended to represent the immense responsibility news professionals have for making sure information is accurate and the consequences they face for sloppy work, said Associate Professor Bruce Henderson, adviser to the student-run Campus Press.
Most instructors allow students to make up papers that receive a failing grade because of inaccuracies, Dean Paul Voakes said.
Study: U.S. has faith in Internet
Nearly two-thirds of online Americans use the Internet for faith-related reasons, according to a new Pew Internet & American Life Project survey conducted by Professor Stewart Hoover and Assistant Research Professor Lynn Schofield Clark (Ph.D. ’98).
Among the most popular spiritually related online activities measured in the national survey:
- 38 percent of the nation’s 128 million Internet users have sent and received e-mail with spiritual content.
- 35 percent have sent or received online greeting cards related to religious holidays.
- 32 percent have gone online to read news accounts of religious events and affairs.
The report, “Faith Online,” says those who use the Internet for religious or spiritual purposes are more likely to be women, white, middle-aged, college educated and relatively well-to-do.
Zala Volcic has top dissertation
Zala Volcic (Ph.D. ’03) in April was awarded the Nafziger-White Award for the year’s top dissertation in mass communication by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC). She will be honored at AEJMC’s plenary business meeting in August in Toronto. Associate Professor Andrew Calabrese chaired her dissertation committee.
