Associate Professor Jan Whitt

jan whitt Associate Professor Jan Whitt taught Critical Thinking and Writing for the School and for the CU-Boulder Division of Continuing Education. Whitt coordinated 36 sections of the course and worked with the graduate students who teach the individual sections. She also taught Contemporary Media, Introduction to LGBT Studies and Literature and Journalism of the West. The latter is the capstone course for the Center of the American West certificate program.

This year, Whitt celebrated her own graduation from the Journalism and Mass Communication Leadership Institute in Diversity program, sponsored by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication and the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication. The program required her to participate in a series of workshops, one week of supervision by a dean and four conference presentations.

"The program is designed to encourage women and people of color to move into the administration of a research center, a university program or a school or department of journalism and mass communication," Whitt said. She said that not only was the program outstanding but that the personal contacts she made were invaluable.

Whitt completed her manuscript, "Secret Sharers: The Other Women in American Journalism," this year. It will be published by Westview Press. She has begun working on her next book, "Settling the Borderland: The Women of American Literary Journalism."
