The '90s

Heather Draper (MA '90), a reporter for the Rocky Mountain News, took second place in general business reporting at the Society of Professional Journalists' 25th annual Colorado competition in May and first place for her special section story, “Starting Over,” at the Colorado Associated Press editors and Reporters contest in February.

John Russell ('90), a reporter and photographer for Steamboat Pilot & Today, won first place for his sports columns and honorable mention for sports photo at the Colorado Associated Press Editors and Reporters contest in February. Russell also received four awards at the Colorado Press Association awards in February: second place for best news photograph, second place for best sports photograph, and two second places for best sports column writing.

Jay Stickney ('90) is in his fourth season as the radio play-by-play sportscaster for the University of Denver Pioneers hockey team. He reported during the Pioneers' National Championship in College Hockey this year. He also starred in the independent film “Strange Kind of Woman,” which will premiere in Denver sometime during the summer. The film was produced and directed by Ray Mahoney. Jaystickney@msn.com

Tim Wieland ('91) was promoted from assistant news director to news director at KCNC-Channel 4 in Denver.

Sean Jackson ('92), a copy editor at The Durango Herald, won first place for best headline writing, first place for best news page design and third place for best feature page design at the Colorado Press Association awards in February.

Laura Porto ('92) graduated in May with a master's degree in media studies from the New School University in New York. She recently joined the New York office of SBI. Razorfish, a leading U.S. Web development company. She is manager of content strategy.

Erika Gonzalez ('93), a reporter for the Rocky Mountain News, received second place in arts and entertainment reporting at the Society of Professional Journalists' 25th annual Colorado competition in May.

Jeannette Graham ('93), a reporter at KKTV-TV in Colorado Springs, had a baby girl late last year with Patrick Graham ('94).

Lisa Marshall ('94), a reporter for the Boulder Daily Camera, won first place in science/environmental/agriculture/medical reporting, first place in sports feature writing and second place in business reporting for investigative and enterprise reporting at the Colorado Professional Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists awards in May.

Julie Jargon ('97) won several awards for her Westword series on the Air Force Academy rape scandal including the Livingston Award, the Investigative Reporters & Editors Award and second place in the John Bartlow Martin Awards. She has left Westword for a job with Crain's Chicago Business.

Steve Le Peau ('98) has moved back to Colorado after working for CBS Sports in New York. He is a free-lance production assistant, font coordinator, associate producer and associate director for the Golf Channel, which requires him to travel most of the year. Courtney Oakes ('99), a reporter for the Aurora Sentinel, received two second places for best sports event story and a third place for best sports story at the Colorado Press Association awards in February.

Josh Rymes ('99) won first-place in general news at The Associated Press awards in New Mexico for his story on Native Americans in Gallup, N.M., who get high on hairspray.
