Bill Scanlon ('80), a reporter at the Rocky Mountain News, won the First Amendment Award at the Society of Professional Journalists' 25th annual Colorado competition for stories about questionable practices of a Denver doctor. The award recognizes the efforts to preserve and strengthen the freedom of the press. Kaye Bache-Snyder (MA '81) wrote a collection of poetry about Colorado, “Pinnacles and Plains,” which was published by Finishing Line Press. She was a reporter for The Denver Post and an editor for the Longmont Daily Times-Call. She now teaches workshops at the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities and continues to write. Pamela Robillard Mackey ('81) is a member of the Denver law firm Haddon, Morgan, Mueller, Jordan, Mackey & Foreman, P.C. Cliff Grassmick ('82), a photographer for the Boulder Daily Camera, received a third place for feature photography and a third place for sports photography at the Colorado Professional Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists awards in May. Shannon Luthy Lukens ('82) a columnist and editor for the Mountain News Corp. and daily columnist for www.onthesnow.com, won honorable mention in competition for the Harold Hirsch Award from the North American Snowsport Journalists Association. Glenn Asakawa ('86), a photographer for The Denver Post, won first place for news photography and third place for feature photography at the Society of Professional Journalists' 25th annual Colorado competition in May. Asakawa received second place for best photo essay at the Colorado Press Association awards in February and also received three awards at the Colorado Associated Press Editors and Reporters contest in February: first place and honorable mention in photo illustration, and honorable mention in general news photo. Charles Ashby ('86), a reporter for The Durango Herald, received honorable mention for his environmental story, “Interest in Water Bank Grows,” at the Colorado Associated Press Editors and Reporters contest in February.
