Chavez scholarship
remembers victims
The students of MEMO, the School's Multi Ethnic Media Organization, and Instructor Ramon Chavez have decided to create a scholarship fund for incoming freshmen. The seed money for that scholarship fund, $2,000, is being donated by Chavez and his wife, Deborah.
"In the wake of the tragic events at Columbine High School, Deborah and I decided that it would be appropriate that the scholarship be named in honor of three of the victims of the tragic shootings at the high school," he announced at the School's annual awards banquet April 25.
Half of the seed money will be set aside for next year. The other half is to be awarded to graduating high school seniors this year who have been accepted and who will be enrolling at CU as pre-journalism majors, Chavez said.
The scholarships this year will go to a freshman (or freshmen) who must "show a commitment to a mass media career, a firm commitment to the principles of MEMO and to the principles of diversity and tolerance," he said.
"My wife and I had already decided earlier this year to donate money from our good fortunes to a scholarship specifically for an incoming diversity candidate.
"This money will be seed money that we hope will be given annually under the banner of the Multi Ethnic Media Organization."
