The '90s

Betsy Abbott (’90) is the publisher of Famazon Magazine, a quarterly magazine by, for and about female fans of sci-fi, fantasy, comics, anime, horror and cosplay, a costume role-playing game.betsy@famazons.com

John F. Russell (’90) of the Steamboat Pilot & Today won first place for a sports photo and honorable mention for a sports column in the Colorado Associated Press Editors and Reporters contest in February.

Emilia Costales Reed (’91) is doing communications and educational outreach at CU’s Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics in Boulder.

Daire Coco (’92) lives in Guadalajara, Mexico, where she is a freelance writer for the Guadalajara Reporter. Coco said she originally went to Guadalajara to learn Spanish and teach English, but after realizing she would be there for a while, she found the freelance job and became certified to do translations.

John Pribble III (MA ’92) is the founder/partner at Think-Brand LLC, a management consulting firm specializing in applying design thinking to difficult problems. Pribble also is the founder/owner of German Village Guest House, a hotel in the nation’s largest privately funded historic district in Columbus, Ohio.

Marty Caivano (’94) took third-place honors for her photo essay “A Time to Heal” at the annual Colorado Associated Press Editors and Reporters contest in February. She also received second-place honors for the piece at the annual Colorado Press Association awards ceremony. Caivano is a photographer for the Boulder Daily Camera.

Sarah Scoltock (’94) is the public relations manager for Holland America Line. Scoltock lives in Seattle.

Joe Hanel (’95), a reporter for The Durango Herald, won honorable mention for public service in the Colorado Associated Press Editors and Reporters contest in February.

Leslie Oliver (’96) is Communications & Policy director for U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter, D-Colo., in Lakewood. After graduating from CU, she moved to Washington, D.C., and did political polling for NBC News and The Wall Street Journal during the Clinton/Lewinsky scandal.  She said highlights of that job included working with Tim Russert and Al Hunt.  She moved back to Colorado in 2000 and attended law school at DU. She practiced law for two years before joining Perlmutter’s office.

Brent Schrotenboer (’96), a sports reporter for the San Diego Union-Tribune, won three national top 10 writing awards from the Associated Press Sports Editors for stories published in 2008. He also won third place nationally in sports reporting in the prestigious National Headliner Awards. That award was for a collection of five stories published in 2008.

Christie DeLuca (’99) is the marketing and communications manager for Flatiron Construction in Longmont. DeLuca recently earned a marketing certification offered by the Society of Marketing Professional Services.

Susan Glairon (MA ’99) of the Longmont Times-Call won honorable mention for beat reporting in the Colorado Associated Press Editors and Reporters contest in February.

Lisa Weber (MA ’99), a freelance producer, recently helped cast four episodes of TLCs “What Not to Wear” in Dallas. Since leaving CU, she worked in broadcast news for six years as a reporter and fill-in anchor before she switched to pharmaceutical sales for a time. Weber has also done corporate video work.
