Announcing: The Zimmers' unique sports scholarship

By John Pepperdine

As a play-by-play announcer for the Colorado Buffaloes Radio Network for 34 years, Larry Zimmer has provided commentary for the Denver Broncos, Colorado State football, the Western Athletic Conference, NCAA basketball tournaments and, of course, the Buffaloes.

But Larry also teaches the sports announcing class at SJMC. He sees first-hand how his students push themselves to succeed in a very competitive field.

Because of this experience, Larry and his wife, Brigitte, created the Larry and Brigitte Zimmer Sports Announcing Endowed Scholarship.

As an endowed scholarship, the initial gift will generate interest to provide tuition assistance to a student interested in – and who has demonstrated ability in – sports announcing.

Being an endowed and permanently funded scholarship, the fund will grow enough every year to keep up with inflation while still providing interest from the initial gift to help fund a student's tuition.

The scholarship for aspiring announcers is the first of its kind at the School.

"I wanted to make it easier for the students to make it," Larry Zimmer said.

"I had to hold four jobs when I was in school, and it wasn't easy. I've been fortunate in my career and wanted to leave a legacy to my profession."

Have you ever considered a naming your own scholarship or award? You might be surprised at the opportunities available. Below are just some of the possibilities.

  • Tuition help for a first-generation college student.
  • Competitive award for outstanding student or teacher.
  • Scholarship for military veteran student.
  • Support for a single parent returning to school.
  • Specify a freshman, sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student.
  • Travel costs for students in an investigative journalism class.

These are just some of the choices available when looking to support students and the School.

I invite you to contact us so we can explore these choices with you and establish a fund that inspires you.

If you think a scholarship or award might be a way you'd like to help a student or support a faculty member, please contact me directly at 303-492-4550 or john.pepperdine@cufund.org.
