Shooting Boulder and beyond for 23 years

Photos by Cliff Grassmick

After graduating from CU with degrees in News-Editorial and psychology, Cliff Grassmick (’82) became a mental health worker in Denver, Boulder and California. Then, 100 days in a Semester at Sea program took him around the world and changed his life. “When I returned, I knew what I wanted to do with the rest of my life – capture the moments around me through photography, to use my way of ‘seeing’ to tell stories of sports, news, features, travel, weddings or life in general,” Grassmick writes on his Web site, cliffpix.com. In 1985, the Rocky Ford native began his professional photography career at the Longmont Daily Times-Call and moved to the Boulder Daily Camera the next year. For more than two decades, newspaper readers in Boulder County have witnessed his ability to capture compelling local images. But he’s also provided intimate insights into unfamiliar surroundings: from Nepal in 1996, from China in 1997, from Tibet in 1999 (as presented on the cover of this edition) and from Namibia in 2000. He is also a photographer for the CU Athletic Media Relations office, and among the publications in which his freelance work has appeared are USA Today, Sports Illustrated and The Sporting News.
