SJMC outreach team heads to Pueblo
Dean Paul Voakes discusses ethical issues in online journalism with communications professionals and college and high school journalism students and advisers at Pueblo Community College during the SJMC's April presentation of The George Orbanek Journalism Workshop. The workshops are named after George Orbanek ('75), who recently retired as publisher of The Daily Sentinel in Grand Junction and are funded by a grant from the Cox Foundation. The workshops present lessons in finding factual information on the Web and presenting it to Colorado communities. |
Hearst honors CU broadcast, photojournalism students
Broadcast News senior Thomas Hendrick ('08) placed first in the William Randolph Hearst Foundation Journalism Awards Program for broadcast features in January. There were 65 student entries from 38 accredited journalism programs in the United States. Hendrick is now eligible to compete for a spot in the program's national broadcast news championships in San Francisco.
Broadcast News student Erin Mahrer placed in the top 20 in the Hearst broadcast features competition, and senior Broadcast Production student Kasia Broussalian placed among the top 20 in the photojournalism competition twice this academic year.
Colorado Broadcasters give award to News-Ed major
The Colorado Broadcasters Association awarded SJMC News-Editorial senior – and independent producer – Kathrine Warren first place in the category of best sales promotion for an advertiser for ads she created for Coldwell Banker Heritage House Realtors of Durango that featured personal-hero spots from the staff that ran on public radio station KSUT-FM.

Westword makes it an even
10 for KVCU- AM Radio 1190
For the 10th year in a row, Radio 1190 was recognized by Westword with a "Best of Denver" award. Westword called the station "an oasis of exciting music, creative programming and community support in a desert of corporate mediocrity."

Campus Press growth plan
Jim Birschbach, father of SJMC Broadcast News student Kelley Birschbach, volunteered to consult for The Campus Press on the matter of a revenue growth plan. Birschbach was the vice president for sales for TCI when it was the nation's largest cable company. He now operates his own consulting company for media/advertising sales. His clients include ESPN, Nielsen Media Research, NBC Cable and Google.
June conference to focus on
media, spirituality & change
More than 100 participants will study how media culture, civic engagement and spiritualities intersect to form practices, discourses and the material expressions of social change at the "Media, Spiritualities, and Social Change" Conference, June 4-7, on the CU-Boulder campus, co-sponsored by the SJMC Center for Media, Religion and Culture. Telefund campaign donors
push giving rate up 50%
In the CU Foundation's annual telefund campaign, generous friends and alumni have donated $26,856 to the SJMC so far this year. That's compared to $16,000 at the same time last year. Such donations allow the school to offer student scholarships and programs that otherwise wouldn't be possible.
