Larry Zimmer, Chris Riva and Dave Plati
Rick Reilly ('81) Sports Illustrated columnist, Time magazine contributor and author, is interviewed by senior Jeff Sussman of NewsTeam Bouder. Reilly spoke in March at the University Memorial Center Glenn Miller Ballroom. His new book, "Who's Your Caddy?" (Doubleday), in which he caddies for everyone from Jack Nicklaus to Donald Trump to a $50,000-a-hole gambler, hit bookstores May 6.

The Scripps Howard Foundation has awarded a three-year grant of $150,000 to the Center for Environmental Journalism to continue hosting the Scripps Howard Institute on the Environment. Attendance at the institute is limited to 25 journalists from around the nation who cover environmental issues. They are selected from among print, broadcast and Web-based media. The weeklong institute was held May 12-17.

Newsgathering master's student Dominique Lemperle was named CU athlete of the week in May after a winning performance at the Big 12 tennis championships in May. She also was named All-Big 12 for singles and doubles, and she made the All-Big 12 academic first team.

Stacy Finz, reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle and winner of the 2003 Al Nakkula Award for Police Reporting, talked to newsgathering classes on March 12, 13 and 14.

News-Editorial major Jody Woodman, a junior, was awarded a $3,000 scholarship for the 2003-04 school year from the Freedom Forum and the NCAA Sports Journalism Scholarship committee. She is one of only eight journalism students nationwide to receive the award.

Michelle Miles, a doctoral student, was awarded a Dorothy Martin Award and a stipend of $1,000 in honor of a professor emeritus in psychology. It is given annually to an outstanding doctoral student at CU for "awareness and activism concerning women's issues, academic excellence and openness to life and true diversity of interests."

Junior News-Editorial student Bart Glasser won sixth place and $500 in the Hearst Journalism Awards Program's Picture Story/Series Competition. Sophomore News-Editorial student Jake Pritchard placed 11th in the contest.

Junior News-Editorial student Angelina Morgan has been awarded a $2,000 Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program grant for her project, "Kilimanjaro Carriers: Their Story," which will be carried out this summer in Kenya.

Nurturing Creativity in the Corporate Environment was the topic of an April presentation by Kevin Carroll, a consultant to CitiBank and other Fortune 500 companies.

Participants discuss media practice and research in the Millennium Hotel during a conference of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication held Feb. 28 to March 2. The School hosted the event, attended by 50 participants from 23 colleges and universities.

Operation Media Freedom, a weeklong event organized by Media Studies students at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, was held in April. A series of events tackled issues including corporate culture and the media, media and the environment, cultural representations and the media, spin and counterspin, and how media culture meets war culture. Events included a panel titled "Em Bed with the Military: The Media at War." Panelists included Charlie Brennan, Rocky Mountain News reporter; Vicky Sama, former CNN producer; Professor Michael Tracey, former head of research for the BBC; and Juliet Wittman, entertainment writer for Westword.
