Kathleen O'Brien Ham ('80) was named deputy chief of the new Office of Strategic Planning and Policy Analysis of the Federal Communications Commission. She lives in Washington, D.C. Joe Prentice ('80), a graphic designer for the Boulder Daily Camera, won a second-place award in February for graphic design in the Associated Press Reporters and Editors contest. Bill Scanlon (MA '80), a reporter for the Rocky Mountain News, won a third-place award in February for a sports story in the Colorado Press Association annual awards. Cliff Grassmick ('82), a photographer for the Boulder Daily Camera, won a first-place award in February in the Associated Press Reporters and Editors contest for general news photography. He won first-place for public service along with Matt Sebastian ('96) and Clay Evans in the Colorado Press Association annual awards contest, also in February, and he won second-place in that contest for service to the First Amendment. Charles Ashby ('86) is the statehouse reporter for The Durango Herald. He serves on the board of the Association of Capitol Reporters and Editors. He also contributes stories to NBC. He recently has traveled to the Persian Gulf, Japan, South Korea and Europe. When he's not reporting, he serves as relief anchor for CNBC. He was awarded Alumnus of the Year for "outstanding contribution to one's profession" by Boston University's Metropolitan College, where he earned his master's degree. The award enables him to serve on the board of advisers for the dean. But, he adds, "my heart is in Boulder not Boston." She also is a partner of Stratagem, a local pro-bono business-consulting group for nonprofit agencies. Leanna Clark ('89) and a business partner recently completed the buyout of Schenkein Public Relations in Denver from Bob Schenkein. They have 30 employees, and clients include Qwest, First Data, Western Union, The Nature Conservancy and Home Depot.
