News-ed, broadcast students earn Hearst awards
Nick Groke, news-ed senior, placed 10th in the in-depth writing category in the William Randolph Hearst Journalism Awards Program for collegiate journalists. His story was about head injuries in female athletes that ran in The Denver Post sports section. Groke and the School each get $500. Groke is a Post intern this semester.
Kathryn Cook, another news-ed senior, placed 11th in the portrait and personality competition. She was a photo intern at the Greeley Tribune last fall and at The Durango Herald last summer. She received a Poynter Institute Visual Journalism Fellowship to attend the institutes seminar in St. Petersburg in June.
News-ed senior and Campus Press editor Darin McGregor placed 14th in photography, and Jody Woodman, sophomore and Campus Press sports editor, tied for 18th in sports reporting.
Broadcast news senior Angela Gasperini, KVCU-AM news director, placed 17th in the Hearst radio broadcast news competition. She submitted a feature on the CU honor code and another on a peace rally in Denver in December.
The entries originally aired on KVCUs weekly news magazine, Undercurrents, in November and December.
