Associate Professor Jan Whitt

jan whittAssociate Professor Jan Whitt taught Modern and Contemporary Literature for the English Department as well as Contemporary Media and Critical Thinking and Writing in the School. Last summer, she taught Women and Popular Culture.

“I was appointed last summer as faculty co-director of the Undergraduate Academy, an intellectual community of 200 students at the University of Colorado. The group includes Norlin and Boettcher scholars,” Whitt said.

She published an article about Denver television news anchor Adele Arakawa in “Women in Local Television, Indelible Images;” and also published articles about the history of lesbian magazines in the Journal of Lesbian Studies and about Edgar Allan Poe and how his short stories are used in mysteries made for American television in “Readings on the Short Stories of Edgar Allan Poe.”

Whitt received three teaching awards: from the LEAD Alliance, a group of CU students of color; from the Committee on Learning and Academic Support; and from the CU Parents Association.

She presented papers on the social commentary of “The Beverly Hillbillies,” on effective ways of teaching novels by Carson McCullers and on Arakawa. Jan.Whitt@Colorado.edu
