For the Steamboat Pilot, he won third-place in the sports column category and first-place in sports photography from the Colorado Press Association. For the Hayden Valley paper, he won first-place in sports photography from the Colorado Press Association.

He and Kendall Slee (’93) traveled to France this spring and are expecting their first child in November. They live in Falls Church, Va.

1995

Steve Hall (’95 MA), after 18 months with the Colorado Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation, was promoted to director of public affairs and marketing. He has been the acting director for nearly a year. He is also an adjunct professor of journalism at Metropolitan State College of Denver and published an article in Outdoor Life magazine about his adventures as a fly-fishing guide.

Julie Meidlinger (’95 MA) was a columnist for several small papers in the Virginia Beach area. Unfortunately, the papers closed, but she reports that she is at home, caring for her 3 year-old daughter, and says, “I’m busier than I’ve ever been.” kirstensmom@hotmail.com

Eric Frankowski (’96 MA) of the Longmont Daily Times-Call won first-place in the deadline category from the Colorado Press Association.

Angus McGilpin (’96) and Lori White (Span, Comm, ’97) were married last May in California’s Napa Valley. They live in San Francisco.

Brent Schrotenboer (’96) recently found himself on Texas Tech basketball coach Bobby Knight’s bad side. According to the Boulder Daily Camera, Schrotenboer, a reporter for the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, angered Knight by mentioning that Knight was dismissed at Indiana after 29 years. Knight asked someone at the sports information director’s office to tell Schrotenboer that Knight didn’t want him around anymore, implying that his credentials might be revoked. It took intervention by Texas Tech Athletic Director Gerald Myers to get Knight to resume acknowledging Schrotenboer at news conferences.

Carly Schulaka (’96) accepted a position as associate editor of Senior Market Advisor magazine, a trade publication for financial planners. The magazine is a monthly Wiesner publication with a national circulation of 35,000. Previously, Schulaka was the editor of a Boulder-based Web site for nursing mothers and before that was a business reporter at the Boulder Daily Camera for three years. cschulaka@wiesner.com

1997

Zak Gilbert (’97) left his position as media relations director for the Colorado Rockies to become an assistant public relations director for the Green Bay Packers.

Anthony Martini (’97) was promoted to co-anchor of the morning show at KCOY-TV in Santa Maria, Calif. The station covers news from Santa Barbara to San Luis Obispo, Calif.

Karen Mockler (’98 MA) won the Dolly Connelly Award for Environmental Journalism for a series on the Columbia River estuary while working for the Daily Astorian in Oregon. Theresa (Benda) Sauer (’98) moved from her position in Colorado Gov. Bill Owens’ policy office to working on his campaign for re-election as his deputy press secretary. Dana (Fogel) Taylor (’98) married Britton Taylor, a strategic planner at Goodby, Silverstein & Partners in September. She also received a master’s degree in advertising from Virginian Commonwealth University Ad Center in May 2001. They live in Richmond, Va.

1999

Curtis Esquibel (’99) is working in education on the Jemez Pueblo reservation in New Mexico. He tutors students and helps them with college scholarship applications. Kim “Sassy” Hackett (’99) is the morning show co-host and program director for KKNN-FM 95 Rock in Grand Junction. In the fall Arbitron ratings, the station dominated almost all adult, and especially male demographics which means she is the brand manager of the No. 1 radio station in western Colorado.

Rebecca Self Hill (’99 Ph.D.) along with a partner founded 2SmartScribes, a corporate free-lance writing company “creating an avenue for talented moms to work from home.” The company is based out of their homes in Boulder County. Their Web site is www.2smartscribes.com.
