Partnerships provide new opportunities for School

The School's 1999-2000 fund raising campaign is off to a terrific start, thanks largely to a seven-figure corporate gift. Omnicom Group Inc., the world's premier marketing communications company, recently agreed to contribute $1 million to CU over the next three years. The gift will establish a Laboratory for New Media Strategy and Design at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

This venture is a prime example of the SJMC's increasingly multidisciplined, multimedia nature. The School will partner with CU's Alliance for Technology, Learning and Society (ATLAS) program in an effort to prepare students for new media challenges in the digital environment.

Toward this end, we are seeking additional partnerships with other corporations and foundations. The School will submit a grant proposal to the Knight Foundation for a prestigious Knight Chair. We also are working with another prominent foundation on a proposal to enhance our emerging technology initiative.

While corporate and foundation gifts to the SJMC are on the rise, contributions from alumni and friends of the School remain the lifeblood of our annual giving program. The list of alumni and friends who demonstrate their interest in and loyalty to the School is growing. Last year, 461 donors contributed nearly $130,000. This year we hope to top the $150,000 mark.

Everyone plays an essential role in the SJMC's success and has a stake in its future. We hope you will consider some of the many ways to partner with our students, faculty and staff in shaping that future. There's still time to make a calendar year-end gift to the School. Please take a moment to write a check payable to the University of Colorado Foundation, and mail it to the Foundation at P.O. Box 1140, Boulder, CO 80306. Your financial support makes a difference to our students.

Should your plans bring you to campus, please stop by the School for a visit. If there is anything I can do for you, do not hesitate to contact me at 303-492-1097 or via e-mail (wanderstock@cufund.colorado.edu).
Thanks for investing in our School!

Winsor heads new
resource committee

To date, the School of Journalism and Mass Communication has raised $4.4 million toward its overall campaign goal of $7.6 million. In order to ratchet up our efforts, the School has formed a Resource Development Committee. Headed by John Winsor, a loyal supporter of the School and a member of the School's Advisory Board, the committee's objective is to bring in major gifts of $50,000 and above from alumni, corporations, foundations and friends of the School.

1989-99 alums can take the Bittman-Noble challenge

Alumni from the classes of 1989 through 1999 can have a direct impact on the School by participating in the Chris Bittman/Kenda Noble Young Alumni Challenge Fund. Chris Bittman ('85) and Kenda Noble ('82 A&S) will once again match all gifts of $10 to $100 -- dollar for dollar -- from every young alum who makes a first-time gift in that range. They also will match all gifts from previous donors who agree to increase their last annual gift by at least 10 percent.
