Lifecourse project gets
widespread recognition

The School's Symbolism, Media and the Lifecourse project, headed by Interim Dean Stewart Hoover, shone in the international spotlight this past summer. Dean Hoover kicked off the Third International Conference on Media, Religion and Culture in Edinburgh, Scotland, in July. He delivered the opening speech, which he titled "The Converging Worlds of Religion and the Media."

Lynn Schofield Clark, the School's first post-doctoral fellow, was interviewed by a number of Scottish national newspapers, as well as BBC radio and television. Three other project members -- doctoral students Diane Alters, Joe Champ and Lee Hood -- also presented papers. The Lifecourse project examines a number of themes relating to families and media use.

The entire team also presented papers at the International Communication Association conference in San Francisco in May.

KVCU gets favorable
attention in first year

Only a year old in November, CU's new radio station has already won critical acclaim. Favorable news stories and reviews about KVCU The AM Revolution appeared in all Denver and Boulder daily newspapers and several entertainment-oriented weeklies.

Opportunity knocks
for broadcast students

When big news happens in Boulder, broadcast students get hired.
Some students in "NewsTeam Boulder" as well as TV Reporting and Production 2 classes were hired by ABC Wide World of Sports to work as runners during the Sept. 18 CU vs. University of Kansas football game.

Dave Briggs, Brian Wilcox and Stacy Olson were subsequently hired to work for ABC at the World Skating Championships in Colorado Springs, Oct. 26-30.

Students got more network experience for CNN, CBS and NBC in October when the Boulder County grand jury finished its investigation into the murder of JonBenet Ramsey.

Some students working for CNN drove back and forth between the Boulder County Justice Center and the CNN workspace on 30th Street with tapes and information.

Julie Hong, meanwhile, worked with the CBS movie crew shooting the film version of the story, set to run early next year.

Reaccreditation visit set
for early '00 by ASJMC
