Lavonne Luquis (’88) wasn’t expecting a sudden job change.
“I led
Latino.com until it went under during the infamous dot-com bust in early
2001,” she said. Luquis, co-founder of Latino.com, said she knew
that despite the sudden change of fortune, she had to continue to help
inform and entertain minorities. She soon was hired at the University
of California-Berkeley as strategic communications director and continued
her quest. “I launched their first systemwide Spanish-language
communications program,” she said.
After three years in California,
Luquis was offered a position as director of programming at America
Online Latino. She said she was excited to move her career back to the
Internet. “I
could again spend my days finding the best ways to provide an entertaining
mix of content online,” she said.
Luquis lives with her husband,
Max Ramirez, in Dulles, Va. She said they enjoy spending their weekends
exploring the beautiful Virginia area.
