Betty C. Allen Hall ('39), Rohnert Park, Calif, died this fall.
Obituary: C. Anthony "Tony" Wainwright
C. Anthony "Tony" Wainwright ('55), 70, a nationally recognized
consumer advertising and marketing expert known for his eclectic interests,
died on Oct. 3 from recurring health problems.
A U.S. Navy veteran, he started his advertising career in the mailroom
of The Leo Burnett Co. in Chicago. In 1969, he founded the new-ventures
agency, Wainwright, Spaeth & Wright, in Chicago, which helped develop
and launch such new products such as Oil of Olay, Stove Top Stuffing
Mix and Shake n Bake.
Among other positions in advertising, he served as chairman of Compton
Partners and Saatchi & Saatchi, New York; vice chairman of CME New
York; and vice chairman of Arnold Worldwide Partners of Boston, a $2.5
billion advertising agency representing such clients as Procter & Gamble,
Coors, Volkswagen, Monster.com and Fidelity.
Wainwright also served on several boards of directors including Del Webb
Corp., Danka Business Systems PLC, American Woodmark and the Baylor
Hospital Foundation.
He wrote several published books and screenplays and received awards
and honors including both Cannes and Venice film festival awards and
several Clio awards.
Wainwright also wrote Hollywood movie scripts, books and newspaper columns.
His "Beyond Advertising" column appeared in Advertising
Age in 1987-88. He was also a columnist for Adweek and Variety, and
he wrote speeches for Bruce Babbitt, Ronald Reagan and H. Ross Perot.
As a student at CU in the 1950s, Wainwright worked at radio station
KBOL and what is now KUSA-Channel 9 in the early days of television
in Denver.
In December 1993, he delivered the School's commencement speech.
