David Coons and Sasha Senderovich

The Program in Jewish Studies is excited to announce that faculty member Sasha Senderovich, Assistant Professor of Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures and Jewish Studies, and Jewish Studies and Studio Art double major David Coons recently collaborated on a publication for IN GEVEB, a new, hip online journal of Yiddish studies. The publication, entitled "A Clan on the Move: A Zelmenyaner Family Tree" features an article by Senderovich on the Yiddish novel The Zelmenyaners and a beautiful family tree designed by Coons.

Senderovich, who edited and wrote an introduction for the translated verison of The Zelmenyaners: A Family Saga (2013), teaches the novel in his course Russian Jewish Experience (RUSS/JWST 4401). Heeding student demand for a family tree, Senderovich recruited Coons to use his graphic design skills to produce a clear guide to the Zelmenyaner's complicated web of family relations. In preparation, Coons studied Soviet design art from the 20th century (the era of the novel) and fused this design with his own slick style.
