Tips & Tricks
- Make sure your computer's operating system is updated, and updated
often. Unpatched vulnerabilities make it easier for people to exploit
your computer through the software you use.
- One of the best ways to help protect your computer and your information
is to have current antivirus software installed on your computer. Antivirus
software should be configured to regularly scan for viruses and download
new virus definition files. ITS offers no-cost antivirus software and
also supports both Symantec Antivirus and McAfee Virus Scan.
- Consider also running a firewall on your system (Windows XP makes
this easy).
- Practice safe computing by not opening attachments you are not expecting,
especially in e-mails that look unusual. If you think it's from someone
you know, contact that person to make sure they did, in fact, send
the message.
- Be thoughtful about which web sites you connect to. Some are less
scrupulous than others.
