FAQ

How does UCB Guest Wireless work?

ITS provides wireless Internet access to guests visiting CU-Boulder. The service provides general Internet access that is separate from the wireless system that CU-Boulder students, faculty, and staff use. To access this special wireless network, a guest will need a CU-Boulder student, faculty or staff member to sponsor him or her through a sponsorship form at https://ucbguestsponsor.colorado.edu. During the sponsorship process, the guest is given a username and password. These credentials will work on UCB Guest for a pre-set time period. Once sponsored, the guest can access wireless by selecting UCB Guest as their wireless network, opening a web browser and logging in with their credentials set up by their sponsor. I’m visiting CU-Boulder, how do I get on the wireless network?

To access UCB Guest Wireless you will need to have a CU-Boulder affiliated student, faculty or staff member sponsor you. Once sponsored, select UCB Guest as your network, open a web browser and login with the credentials your sponsor set up for you. Click here to learn more.

Do I have to have a sponsor?

Yes. UCB Guest Wireless is only provided to those guests who have a CU-Boulder affiliated sponsor. UCB Guest Wireless is intended for guests visiting this campus that are here for official business or those visiting friends and family members.

Can the IT Service Center sponsor me?

No.

What if I don’t have a sponsor?

You cannot access UCB Guest Wireless without a sponsor. UCB Guest Wireless is intended for guests visiting CU-Boulder that are here for official business or those visiting friends and family members.

How long does guest access last?

Access time depends on a guest’s sponsor:

  • Student sponsors: three days
  • Faculty and staff sponsors: five days

What can I access with UCB Guest Wireless?

UCB Guest Wireless only provides general Internet use, including access to Library resources. Please review Norlin Library's Terms of Use for Electronic Resources. You may encounter protected servers and services on the CU-Boulder campus that are provided strictly for CU-Boulder affiliated students, faculty and staff members, and not for guest wireless customers.

Am I responsible for what my guest does on UCB Guest Wireless?

Yes. It is important to understand that you are responsible for your guest’s activity. If your guest disobeys CU-Boulder IT policy, you will be contacted and questioned. Therefore, only sponsor people you know. If your guest is not following CU-Boulder IT policies, you can disable their access. Click here to learn how to disable your guest’s access.

How long does my guest have access?

Access time depends on the sponsor’s affiliation with CU-Boulder:

  • Student sponsors: three days
  • Faculty and staff sponsors: five days

Can I extend my guest’s access time?

Yes, but only in the following increments:

  • Student sponsors: three days
  • Faculty and staff sponsors: five days

Can I disable my guest’s access?

Yes. If your guest leaves early or is not following CU-Boulder IT policies, you can disable their access. Click here to learn how.

Can I sponsor more than one guest at a time?

Yes, but ITS advises you to limit your sponsorships since you are responsible for your guests’ activity on UCB Guest Wireless.

I’m organizing a conference. Can I use this system to sponsor my conference attendees?

ITS recommends that you call the IT Service Center to request a conference IdentiKey. A Conference IdentiKey allows wireless access on UCB Wireless, amongst other services. Click here to learn more.

Should I sponsor people I don’t know?

No. Please limit your sponsorships to guests who you know since you will be responsible for their UCB Guest Wireless activity.

How far in advance can I sponsor my guest?

Students, faculty and staff can sponsor a guest up to 30 days in advance. Part of the sponsorship process includes setting a start date and time for guest access.

Can I sponsor my guest from their computer?

No. Your guest will not have Internet access. You will need to use your own computer or device that has Internet access. You can also visit one of ITS’s many kiosks around campus, also known as SCARPIES, to go to https://ucbguestsponsor.colorado.edu.

Why can’t I access the sponsor form from off-campus?

To access the sponsorship form you will need an on-campus connection. That means from off-campus locations, you need to use CU-Boulder’s VPN client to access the form.
