Overview
UCB Wireless access can be found in almost all buildings on campus, in popular campus life locations, and in most residence halls (Bear Creek, Family Housing, and some parts of Kittredge Complex do not have UCB Wireless at this time). CU-Boulder’s wireless network consists of a number of permanently installed access points built with 802.11g network hardware that is WiFi certified (802.11b is also supported).
Wireless is Not Intended for Desktop Computers
UCB Wireless is not intended to replace wired jacks on campus. A campus data jack with a dedicated connection to the campus network is the fastest, most reliable, most secure communication channel for desktop computers. The campus wireless network is intended for short-term access with mobile devices such as laptops, smart phones or PDA's. Wireless signals can be affected by environmental issues such as bookcases, desks, or furniture, as well as interference from 2.4 GHz phones, microwave ovens, Bluetooth devices, and wireless game controllers. Also, wireless service is shared with other users, is slower, and is inherently less secure than wired connections.
