UCB Windows 2000 Project Backround
The Windows 2000 project at the University of Colorado began with our involvement in the Microsoft Rapid Deployment Program (RDP) in April 1999. Recognizing the need to plan ahead for Windows 2000 on the University of Colorado at Boulder (UCB) campus, Information Technology Services (ITS) agreed to participate in the RDP program in an attempt to stay ahead of the Windows 2000 learning curve. The RDP team consisted of members from several units within ITS, including Central and Unix Services, UnixOps, Micro Systems Group, and Networking as well as several individuals from Microsoft Consulting Services. The team followed Microsoft's project planning paradigm in four phases; envisioning, planning, testing, and deployment. From April 1999 to February 2000, the team worked through the complex issues associated with integrating Windows 2000 and Active Directory into the well established computing infrastructure at UCB. The RDP team web site provides more detailed information on the entire RDP program.
In January 2000, a new ITS unit was created to transition from the RDP team process into our production deployment of Windows 2000 and Active Directory. NDOS, Network and Desktop Operating Systems, took over the work of the RDP team and began the work of actually building the Active Directory at UCB. Since its inception, the NDOS group has focused on the Windows 2000 deployment at UCB. We assist other university departments in their Windows 2000 deployments and collaborate extensively with other universities as they deploy Windows 2000. Our goal is to provide a stable, secure, and unified Windows 2000 computing environment for everyone at UCB.
