Disabling Dynamic DNS Registration in Windows 2000

By default, Windows 2000 workstations and servers will attempt to dynamically register their DNS name with the DNS server and domain controller. At UCB, dynamic DNS is not currently used for security reason. ITS asks that Windows 2000 users turn off the dynamic DNS update feature on computers in the campus domain to reduce the unnecessary error messages received by our servers. This document describes the process to disable these updates:

  1. Open the "Network and Dial-up Connections" folder by either right-clicking on "My Network Places" and selecting "Properties", or my opening the control panels folder and double-clicking on the "Network and Dial-up Connections" folder. Either way you will see a window like this (it may have more icons):

Windows 2000 Network and Dial-up Connections folder showing a local area network icon

  2. Right-click on the "Local Area Network" icon (if you have more than one, perform this task on each one) and select "Properties". A window like this will appear:

Windows 2000 properties of a local area connection window

  3. Select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and click the "Properties" button. A window like this will appear:

    Windows 2000 TCP/IP properties window

  4. Click the "Advanced" button and select the "DNS" tab from the window that appears. It should look like this:

Windows 2000 advanced TCP/IP properties window showing the DNS tab

  5. Uncheck the box labeled "Register this connection's address in DNS" and click "OK".
  6. Click "OK" on the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" window and the "Local Area Connection Properties" window.
