Encrypt your telnet and FTP terminal applications

Telnet and FTP terminal applications are vulnerable because they transfer information in a plain text format. A vulnerability like this can put your data in danger of being interceptedby someone with bad intentions. Follow the directions below to prevent this form happening.

Telnet and FTP Terminal Applications

Telnet Terminal Applications

  • Usually used for the e-mail program Pine or web page modification

  • Replace your current telnet terminal application with SSH (Secure Shell)

FTP Terminal Applications

  • FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol

  • WS_FTP is the most common FTP application for Windows

  • Replace your current FTP terminal application with SSH (Secure Shell)

SSH (Secure Shell) can be used for both your telnet terminal application and your FTP terminal application.

  1. Download SSH Communications Windows Client (Version 3.2.9, which includes support for pass-thru printing)

  2. Read through and refer to the SSH Secure Shell Initial Connection and Transferring Files instructions after download and installation

Web Publishing Clients

  • People who use programs like Dreamweaver and Netscape Composer to create and publish web pages.
  • Download and use a "tunnel" to make your connections to ITS servers secure, while still being able to use your program's publish or FTP tool.

Windows SSH Tunnel

  1. Go to the Windows SSH Secure Shell Tunnel web site for downloads and instructions for setting up your tunnel and your web publishing client.
